Thanksgiving Eve video
The Thanksgiving Eve video was not really planned. It was an afterthought. It was a creative use of random media from a test shoot.
About a year ago I acquired a mirrorless camera. In the beginning I used it. At first I started to learn the nuances of the camera. I would experiment and test its limits. Then after a few shoots I found that for most of what I did my GoPro worked just fine.
However, now that I am starting to go to events in the evening I thought it may be good to start using the bigger camera again.
Cameras these days are much more like computers. The settings are like learning a new operating system or program. Fortunately I enjoy learning new software. But when I want to get a video or photo I do not want to worry about a lot of settings. I often see something and want to just turn the camera on and get the shot, no mess no fuss. That is where the GoPro comes in. Pull it out of your pocket, turn it on, point it, and record.
The mirrorless camera is bigger and the size adds effort to using it. It also requires more fussing about with settings.
Why even bother with a more expensive and cumbersome camera? Well, the main reason I wanted a mirrorless camera was for shooting in lowlight. I thought it would be good to capture images inside buildings. The reason I wanted to do this is to document and storyize different businesses, unique houses, and historic locations.
On Thanksgiving Eve I wanted to test some picture profiles and shooting modes. In addition I was planning on getting a few stills to add to what amounts to my personal stock footage library. While I think Canva is great for finding photos, I like to have my own original work.
I am also experimenting with the ability to easily color grade video when combining GoPro and mirrorless camera videos and photos.
In the Thanksgiving Eve video I was using settings I never use for the GoPro and a couple of different styles for the mirrorless camera.
The location for my Thanksgiving Eve video was chosen because of its abandoned look. The last time I went by this location all the major stores in the strip shopping center were all boarded up. It looks like they now have a supermarket in there as a new anchor store. I had no idea what I would shoot. I was primarily looking for interesting subjects and a chance to test what would work well in post production. While driving home I started to put the shots together in my head as a little story about Thanksgiving Eve.
