Video news First of The Year

Helping businesses and individual with video, community management, and social media
Andrew Ledford 562-423-1691

Yes I am continuing with a separate video section for a second week in a row. I’m thinking of breaking these news posts up with other specialty post in the future.

The first article is about using video in 2015. The first rule in this article is keep videos short. I somewhat disagree with this principle but I do agree that the first video a person sees from your business should be short 50 to 90 seconds. I need to mention that I personally break this rule for my dog training business. Although when I redo my introduction videos I may do it in two parts one about 90 seconds long. The second tip from this post is use good framing and don’t ignore the language of video/film. Tip three is to post your video on Instagram. If you read my last blog post you will know that the top social media people think 2015 will be the year of Instagram. Tip four is to engage and interact with your following, especially on YouTube.

YouTube 4 Tips To Follow in 2015
YouTube 4 Tips To Follow in 2015

Next we have some information about the big video news for the beginning of the year and that is Twitter’s Video Player. The Twitter Video Player is the wild card in social media video for 2015. It could be a really big hit, or it could be just another video platform we need to consider. The FaceBook push into video is also something to watch. I think FaceBook video will become more popular in 2015. I do recommend people consider using FaceBook’s video feature as a short term tactic. Once FaceBook video becomes popular they will start charging a fee related to this feature.

Back to the Twitter Player
It will host videos up to 10 minutes and you will be able to upload any size file. This means you can use high quality HD files and in theory it should handle 4K sometime in the near future. In the beginning it will support mp4 and mov files

Guess what, Twitter’s video player is not going to support YouTube videos. Now does that surprise anyone? Twitter wants to carve out their own video niche.

Twitter is not going to allow third parties to sell advertising on their player, or sponsorships or any other monetization that twitter wants to keep for themselves. It will be interesting to see how marketers get around this.

Information About Twitter's Video Player
Information About Twitter’s Video Player

There is a second article on my G+ business page about how Twitter’s Video Player could come to dominate online video. It is an interesting read and could come true. It should give everyone interested in social video a lot to think about and some key Performance Indicators to watch.

Here is a lengthy video on Getting A Grip On YouTube Channels & Playlists. This is a G+ hangout. Hangouts tend to be a bit long and drown out. If you have extra time they are good. If you don’t have extra time then an edited or scripted video might be better to watch.

Speaking of Hangouts On Air you can read an article on the G+ page about How To Structure A Hangout On Air Series. Hint it is much like you would structure a blog series.

Video Social Media Posts December 2014

Helping businesses and individual with video, community management, and social media
Andrew Ledford 562-423-1691

Video News
Now we get to my favorite part of online and social, yes that’s right, it’s Video time. This month I am experimenting with having a separate video post instead of including the video news with the business post. In the future I may segment the video and business post to make for easier reading (less content per post) and to make searching for content on the site more efficient. Or it may be that I only divide the posts into categories when there is a lot to cover in a month.

Now You Can Own the Website SocialMediaVideo.com

What Are Your Video Goals
What Are Your Video Goals

The first post talks about developing a video strategy incorporating goal oriented content creation using four types of video

  1. Videos designed for improved conversions
  2. Videos made to develop brand awareness
  3. Videos created for paid advertising
  4. Videos designed to get links back to the main website and to get social shares

Are businesses confused about the best way to use video content?
There seems to be a consensus in the social media marketing world that most businesses are confused about the best way to use video content. I have posted another article about different types of video and how to use each one in a business’s marketing plan. Because video is expensive to create and optimize it is important to construct this content for your business objective right from the start. One of the things I like about this article is that it also goes over how to get additional content out of the video shoot itself. Getting additional content that can be used for social media and promotion is something I try to do with many of my shoots, provided I have the manpower to to fulfill this task.

FaceBook Video
What is your FaceBook marketing Strategy? For the first time in history more people are uploading video directly to FaceBook instead of sharing their videos from YouTube. It is even suggested that FaceBook viewers engage more than YouTube viewers. This has me thinking about experimenting with uploading videos to FaceBook. FaceBook is placing a great deal more importance on video and how native FaceBook videos are viewed in the stream. Depending on your audience and your goals I can see FaceBook uploads eating into your YouTube watch time thus negatively affecting your placement in YouTube search.

YouTube Search Ranking
I posted a link to a very good article about getting better YouTube search rankings. I incorporate many of these elements into my channel. By using a YouTube optimization system I have seen my visits from YouTube search increase. I know I can do more to get better ranking and more views, but I am thinking about changing the nature of my channel. I don’t want to build a large audience and then start producing totally different content.
Article highlights

  1. In the past YouTube videos with the most views ranked higher. This is no longer true.
  2. Watch Time on YouTube’s is now the number #1 ranking factor
  3. Watch Time is not only how much of your video people watch. It
is also the total minutes and seconds a viewer watches video on YouTube. This includes how much time a viewer watches of the video that brought them into the site and how much time they spend on the site in total. You want a high retention rate combined with viewing other videos, preferably your own.
  4. Create play lists to encourage a linear viewing experience with a series of videos. This is something I have found very helpful.
  5. Optimize your play list with the YouTube start and end time feature. By doing this you channel will become more like a premium television channel. They also suggest linking to other videos with annotation. Linking is a really good practice that I only do with a few videos. I have to say linking to videos has helped make those videos popular in my channel.
  6. Create a really good and accurate thumbnail photo to represent your video. Misleading thumbnails are no longer a useful tactic for increasing your YouTube ranking.
  7. Build your YouTube subscriber base with interaction and engagement
  8. Use annotations to keep your views engaged with the video
  9. Use interactive end states with links to important content
  10. The article also has a case study of using an international strategy to gain improved search rankings. I added that video towards the end of this post.

Vine
Vine is a 6 second iOS video app and this article will go over the basics of using Vine as well as some video techniques for using the app.

I want to end the post with a great video explaining how to become the most popular personality on YouTube

Business Social Media Posts December 2014

Helping businesses and individual with video, community management, and social media
Andrew Ledford 562-423-1691

Welcome to my social media activity for December. This is where I highlight the content I have curated on Social media. I’m planning on doing my curated business content every other week and will also use the same schedule for my personal curations on alternate weeks.

Is WordPress Ready to Revolutionize Online Publishing – Again
What could be the biggest news in my social stream is a few months old. This event happened in April, but with the New Year fast approaching I have started to really consider its importance to online publishing. WordPress bought an online publishing company called Scroll Kit. The new addition to WordPress could threaten Tumblr’s rise. ScrollKit will let one person publish content that used to require large content production teams to create.

Business Social Media December 2014
Business Social Media December 2014

There are a couple of posts about building better business websites. If you’re thinking about building your first website or re-launching an old site I would recommend taking a look at these two articles.
Article 1
Building Better Business Websites – Strategy 2
Building Better Business Websites: Strategy 3:

Do you need some advice on rebranding your identity online? This is something I have been working on. While I have been involved with building websites, online marketing, and social media communities for over 16 years most people do not know about that aspect of my life. Just about everyone thinks of me as the dog trainer.

SEO
I do have a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) article on the page. I found this article quite helpful and think it is something people unfamiliar with SEO should read. I often see companies advertising for SEO jobs that really should read this article too. Often I see that a business wants to hire someone based not on just one, but several of these Search Engine Optimization myths.
The article is called 27 biggest myths about SEO

LinkedIn’s SlideShare
There is a good basic article on what SlideShare is and using it for B2B Lead Generation. I think one of the most interesting bits of information in this article is that soon SlideShare’s pro features will be free.

Pinterest
For those of you getting started with Pinterest I have an article that will give you some ideas about how to start using this photo sharing social network.
Yahoo
When people think of advertising online most of us think first of Google AdWords and then FaceBook ads. Well Yahoo is making a comeback in the form of mobile advertising and it may be a useful advertising platform for your business.

Tumblr
Yahoo’s social blogging site Tumblr made it into the page stream again. I have written about Tumblr’s gain in popularity in the past and it looks like more and more social media people are starting to take notice of Tumblr too. This article is about using Tumblr for job recruitment. Now that is something I have never thought of using Tumblr for. But I do have my eye on a few people who would make great guests for my Television/ITV/YouTube show

Microsoft Language Translation
I was interested in working for a Chinese language teaching company helping them with their online community management and social media so I have been paying a little more attention to this area than usual. If you know me you know I am quite interested in language and I have been trying to follow what Microsoft is doing with language translation. I posted an article that tells about Microsoft finally releasing their translation technology for beta testing through Skype. The first language being tested is Spanish. I have a feeling that German is next on the release schedule. In my opinion it will be some time before they release a Japanese or Chinese version.

Business Social Media Content For the Last Part of November 2014

Posts from my Business Lunch Club Google Plus Page

Are you just getting started in online marketing and promotions? This is a good article to read if you want to get a feel for the basics of online marketing.

Search Engine Optimization – SEO

Do you know about Topic Modeling & Semantic Connectivity? If not you may want to take a look at this video that goes over some of the basics of this emerging topic in Search Engine Optimization

Topic Modeling and search

A website load time is an increasing ranking factor for search ranking. Could your social media plugins be slowing down your site? If so do you think social shares are more important than SEO?

Quality links are still an important part of a websites ability to rank in Search Engines, and I have a guide on my G+ page that will show you how to do it right.
This guide will give you a blue print for modern link building? Just go to this post and click through to the tutorial/online learning modules for the link building guide.

Modern Link Building

Website optimization isn’t all about search engines, it’s about conversions as well. What good is traffic if you don’t have sales? There is a good article about how a lingerie company has made A/B testing a science to improve conversions well above online standards.

A new website ranking factor is whether or not your website is mobile friendly. Google has started tagging mobile friendly sites and this will no doubt become more important in the months to come.

There is also an article about how organic search is transforming business and the speed at which Google search is changing and influencing the transformation.

Social Media
Social media done in just 30 minutes a day. This is a great post for starting your social media habit. I you think you need to be on social but just don’t have the time take a look at this article. If you still can’t manage to find enough time in the day maybe you would like to hire me to help you get started.

If you are in the B2B sector you may want to consider becoming a LinkedIn influencer. The LinkedIn publishing platform is very new so there is a chance to become establish and perhaps entrench in this part of the LI community.

Is Twitter part of your online Social marketing mix? I have used Twitter since the early days. I have to admit I don’t like it as well now as I did when it was new, but I do use it as an important part of my content strategy.

If you market at all on Twitter you may like to know that Twitter’s Historical Content Archive is Now Open to the Public

Pinterest has a great deal of potential. I think the demographic are very good and Pinterest members tend to buy items on their wish lists or what are called pins. The number of search results containing Pinterest content has increased, especially for the categories of beauty, hair, and home.

Pinterest Search Up and YouTube Gets More Traffic Than FaceBook
Pinterest Search Up and YouTube Gets More Traffic Than FaceBook

I love reading about two of my favorite social site working together as a, one two social media punch. Yes Google Plus and Pinterest is a winning combination. This article also mentions Tumblr, a rather undervalued but useful social media platform.

Speaking of Tumblr, there is new data suggesting it’s now the fastest growing social media platform. I have been experimenting with ways to use Tumblr over the last few months. I would say that it has helped increase my social media footprint.

Social media is all about building an online persona and projecting an online identity. Do you know how self identity influences sharing content on social media? How do you think demographics influence the sharing of content?
Find out in the article about online sharing and how it’s affected by individual identity

Snapchat is a social app that is very popular with young people. They just announced a new feature called Snapcash that allow people to transfer fund to each other.

We all know that a media calendar is important, but do you have a media calendar for the holidays. I believe holidays and annual cultural event can be classified as tent pole moments.

Amazon is muscling in on local. Amazon is starting with the lucrative home improvement and repair segment of the market.

Spending on social media advertising jumped 40 percent this year and it’s expected to increase almost 200 percent by 2018

I want to end the social media section with a short post and graph of the leading social networks worldwide. As of November 2014 and ranked by number of active users. I find it very interesting that Google Plus has slightly more active users than LinkedIn (11 million) and that Tumblr has about 30 million more active users than Instagram

Video
You know I love YouTube and video. Video is one of the most powerful forms of online communication. There is new research that shows 85 percent of adults outside of China now visit YouTube which puts it just a little ahead of FaceBook. Hurray!

I found a very good article about how to best use video. I think this article is great because it’s pretty much what I recommend. You know I love YouTube, but it is not always the best place to put your videos. In this article you will learn the best places to put your videos. You will learn when to put them on your own website, when to use YouTube and when other venues may be better.

Anyone looking for a job?
I have two articles about Jobs in the local Southern California area.

The first is good news for Orange County, because the unemployment rate fell to 5%.

Job article number two is about questions you should ask when you go to a job interview. You might want to write these down. Otherwise in the excitement of the moment you might forget to go through all of them

Mobile
Are QR codes dead? I have recently been thinking of using QR codes for a fairly complex marketing campaign for a home improvement company. However, I am beginning to think there may be better alternatives.

SMS Marketing
I have developed an interest in SMS Marketing. I think it can accomplish much of what QR codes can with less effort from the user.
the first article is a bit old it is from 2013. A year can make a big difference in the online word because things move so quickly. But I think it still has some good information.

New technology
I have an article about smart windows that are designed to save not only energy but money as well. I need to say I think a more classic look could be achieved with window shutters and they can be used to darken a room for audio visual presentation as well.

My social media activity the last part of November 2014

I always think my Google Plus personal profile has the most interesting and important information of the week. So it is no surprise I lead with this information.

Saturday I received some very sad news, someone who I have wanted to meet for a while now passed away. Some of you may know I am interested in puppetry. Well a great puppet master from Los Angeles pasted on Friday November 28th. I so wanted to do a TV show about Bob Baker, his career, and his puppets. I am sad to say I will now never have the chance to meet him and share with you his wonderful stories. Events like the passing of Bob Baker make me realize how important it is to find some kind of funding for my local Television show, so I can spend more time sharing the stories of wonderful people and less time trying to pay my bills.
Bob Baker died at the age of 90 – a sad day for puppet lovers everywhere.

I thought this was of some importance since I genuinely enjoy bats. I have liked watching bats from a very early age. The last time I visited my brother in Texas I was treated to a spectacular bat show at a wonderful bat cave. I think I will always remember that night. There is grave concern about bat populations because of their dwindling numbers caused by a terrible bat disease. I found this article that tells about a non lethal means of diagnosing this deadly bat disease. That’s right, there is now a non lethal way to diagnose the terrible White nose syndrome in bats using Black-Lights.

Dogs are considered the oldest domestic animal and there is new evidence that we had domestic dogs over 30,000 years ago

While dogs may be the oldest domestic animal chickens have been found to be quite old as well. This article suggests that chickens are at least 10,000 years old.

If you think those dogs and chickens are rather ancient consider that the small Hominin remains of China found in 1964 are now considered to be over 500,000 thousand years older than previously thought. This cranium is now believed to be 1.15 million years old

Last week we saw quite a bit of racial tension in the United States and I wanted to mention a post I did about the first African Samurai in Japan. He was incorporated into the Oda Clan towards the end of the Sengoku Period

Archaeology
You may know I am quite interested in ancient rock art called pictographs and petroglyphs. There have been some enlightening and wonderful rock art finds in Southeast Asia. I didn’t even know there was surviving rock art in that part of the world. What a magnificent discovery.

There are two posts about ancient trade routes.
One is about the watery ocean trade routes of the ancient Indian Ocean. The other is about the great Silk Road. These are two fascination stories that influenced world populations, trade, and history.

Video
YouTube is adding new features. Two that I am interested in seeing are shared moderation and a GIF maker.
I think shared moderation will be helpful for business accounts. I believe that the GIF maker will make YouTube videos more sharable as micro videos. Micro videos and GIFs are a very popular form of content that also have a very high share rate.

In addition to the new YouTube features I posted an Asian video site because it is supposed to have an innovative form of user generated subtitling. There is a rumor that YouTube may incorporate a similar subtitling feature.

My Happy Thanksgiving G+ video highlights Dogs from the Google Plus Dogs Community

Have you ever heard the phase or a similar one to “they drank the cool aid?” The day I posted this article I read a search engine optimization article that talked about how some SEO companies where giving bad advice to businesses. The businesses that took the bad advice were referred to as those who “drank the cool aid.” Well that phase started from an even that happened November 18th, 1978 when 918 members of the “People’s Temple” cult commit suicide at Jonestown.

Check out my Pinterest account, it is getting close to a milestone in my Pinterest experiment. I will talk more about the Pinterest experiment in future.

As these posts are getting longer I think I will separate my personal profile information from my business pages. I am not sure how the publishing schedule will go, but I would like to do the business information in the middle of the week. What do you think – business first part of the week or personal profile info the first part of the week?

YouTube News

A lot has been going on with YouTube. They have a new state of the art studio for creators in the Los Angeles area and they redid their Creator Playbook & Creator Hub.

The new studio is for qualified creators. I am not sure what that means. But I don’t think it includes me. The new studio is in a building that Howard Hughes once used. It sounds like they have just about everything a YouTube producer could want. Cameras, green screen, sound stages, back lot, post production facilities, and more.

The best part is it’s free to use, provided you are one of those qualified creators.

It looks like YouTube is going to have a big push for people to link their YouTube account with their Google+ profiles.

I have mentioned this an older post, so this is the update. Soon YouTube will give you a chance to link to business pages, what they call a plus page. While YouTube doesn’t have this feature at the moment they do have the ability to prepare for the change. how do you get ready to connect YouTube and Plus? You will need to associate your business YouTube Channel to your Business Google Plus page. Do this by making sure your YouTube account is the owner of manager of your plus page.

The other big news is that YouTube has added more information to their creators Creator Playbook. I have not gone all the way through the new information. It does explain some of the changes and tells how to use the new features. One change that I am sure most of my readers are aware if is their new method of ranking a video. Videos are now ranked higher for the amount of time spent watching them as opposed to how many times the video is clicked.

Additionally YouTube is now able to add captions to videos in six additional languages. These are German, Italian, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Dutch.

P.S. after I posted this blog YouTube came out with a new feature. We knew it was coming and it looks like today is the day. You can now link websites with annotations. Here is the link telling a little more about it. I will need to add a bit more latter.

YouTube will Soon Link To Pages

Here is an interesting development from YouTube.

YouTube is dropping the link your channel and Google plus profile using your real name policy. Today YouTube announced on their blog that you will soon be able to keep you YouTube channel name and still link it to a Google+ page. If I understand right on a business page this should allow several people to manage a YourTube Channel / Google page.

Nitendo Wii, Big Screen TVs and YouTube

Now you can use your Wii to access and control your YouTube experience. that is if you are in the States. It will be coming to other counties soon. At least that is what the YouTube blog says.

The app will give you access to the channels you are subscribed to and to video categories.

Did you catch my blog yesterday about the new annotations YouTube has for making money from your videos?
