Welcome to my social media activity for December. This is where I highlight the content I have curated on Social media. I’m planning on doing my curated business content every other week and will also use the same schedule for my personal curations on alternate weeks.

Is WordPress Ready to Revolutionize Online Publishing – Again
What could be the biggest news in my social stream is a few months old. This event happened in April, but with the New Year fast approaching I have started to really consider its importance to online publishing. WordPress bought an online publishing company called Scroll Kit. The new addition to WordPress could threaten Tumblr’s rise. ScrollKit will let one person publish content that used to require large content production teams to create.

There are a couple of posts about building better business websites. If you’re thinking about building your first website or re-launching an old site I would recommend taking a look at these two articles.

Building Better Business Websites: Strategy 3:

Do you need some advice on rebranding your identity online? This is something I have been working on. While I have been involved with building websites, online marketing, and social media communities for over 16 years most people do not know about that aspect of my life. Just about everyone thinks of me as the dog trainer.

SEO
I do have a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) article on the page. I found this article quite helpful and think it is something people unfamiliar with SEO should read. I often see companies advertising for SEO jobs that really should read this article too. Often I see that a business wants to hire someone based not on just one, but several of these Search Engine Optimization myths.
The article is called 27 biggest myths about SEO

LinkedIn’s SlideShare
There is a good basic article on what SlideShare is and using it for B2B Lead Generation. I think one of the most interesting bits of information in this article is that soon SlideShare’s pro features will be free.

Pinterest
For those of you getting started with Pinterest I have an article that will give you some ideas about how to start using this photo sharing social network.
Yahoo
When people think of advertising online most of us think first of Google AdWords and then FaceBook ads. Well Yahoo is making a comeback in the form of mobile advertising and it may be a useful advertising platform for your business.

Tumblr
Yahoo’s social blogging site Tumblr made it into the page stream again. I have written about Tumblr’s gain in popularity in the past and it looks like more and more social media people are starting to take notice of Tumblr too. This article is about using Tumblr for job recruitment. Now that is something I have never thought of using Tumblr for. But I do have my eye on a few people who would make great guests for my Television/ITV/YouTube show

Microsoft Language Translation
I was interested in working for a Chinese language teaching company helping them with their online community management and social media so I have been paying a little more attention to this area than usual. If you know me you know I am quite interested in language and I have been trying to follow what Microsoft is doing with language translation. I posted an article that tells about Microsoft finally releasing their translation technology for beta testing through Skype. The first language being tested is Spanish. I have a feeling that German is next on the release schedule. In my opinion it will be some time before they release a Japanese or Chinese version.

A lot of social media is manipulated to look more important than it really is.

There is a British site that rates ex boyfriends, like the yelp of ex boyfriends
The web is moving toward giving everyone a rating for specific skills and traits as well as an overall aggregated rating.
The Imdp.com website provides ratings for the entertainment industry including celebrities.

Consumers need to be educated on how to interpret reviews. A lot of reviews are fraudulent. I have seen a lot of reviews that are meant to deceive one into thinking a business is better than it really is. We also heard about how competitors use reviews to make a competing business look bad on sites like yelp.
Most people at the meeting think Yelp is an evil business. Meeting members talked about yelp using high pressure tactic and half truths to strong arm businesses into paying high fees for not showing competitors ads.

FaceBook did not invent Open Graph but they did develop/perfect a lot of Open Graph
Twitter is using a Summery Card which is similar to Open Graph. The consensus is that Twitter is becoming more like FaceBook

Clarity.fm a place to sell consultation/services on line, and is like the yelp of professional consultants – This tip is from Oscar Gonzalez twitter.com/notagrouch – a good way to make additional income from a consultation is to record the call and charge extra for the recording.

A big question that was ask is “How do you find an SOE company?” The answer, Do a lot of research and know a lot about SEO and SEM before you hire a company
If you are using WordPress study yoast.com and at least use Yoast SEO plugin
The best way to improve SEO is to “help people discover that you will help with one of their problems.”

Boosting a post on FaceBook does fairly good as an advertizing vehicle.
To increase exposure get bloggers in your niche to write blog about your product, event, or cause and then promote by pinning the post on your Pinterest account. I think was another one of Oscar’s tips

Woo commerce is free however you need to pay for additional addons like authorize.net. The consensuses is that authorize.net is the industries preferred way for accepting credit cards. With Authorize.net you can block countries and types of cards

To be successful with a KickStarter campaign you need to get involved with KickStarter groups well in advance of your crowdfunding campaign
A KickStarter campaign will be most successful if you can get 75% of funding from your own contacts. I think getting 50% would be a good bet. But you need to get a large percent of your funding right out of the gate at the beginning of the crowdfunding campaign.
In a KickStarter campaign Video is Very Important! If you are raising funds for a product you also need to give very good information about the product. For clothing this includes thread count and weight.

Blogging Graphics and Alt tags

I recently did a post about my friend’s blog. I usually like using a graphic or photo with my posts. Since his post is influenced by Greek philosophy I wanted something kind of Greeky. I know I have a photo of (Artemis) Diana and her faithful hound.

The problem is it was taken with my old 35 millimeter film camera. That means it is in a box with a whole lot of other photos. I spent over 3 hours looking at old photos and still didn’t find it. However I did find a lot of pictures of attractive girls and dead people. Oh yes, there was also a young guy who looks a little like me.

I ended up using photos of the southwest. That is if you include San Antonio as the Southwest. Not quite Greek but I think they convey the same meaning for a certain people at a certain time in history. Perhaps they still carry that meaning for new generation. These symbols of place and people may even take on new meaning as time and myth transform them into something new.

There are several reasons for using a graphic (picture) in your blog. I used to think it was good for feeding the search engines. It probably still is. My recent experience is that no matter what I do the search engines, at least the one who sounds like the noise a baby makes, doesn’t like me.

Even if the search engines forsake you and cast you into the wilderness to eat only mushrooms and grasshoppers I still think it’s a good idea to use graphics.

Pictures make a post more interesting. I hope you find my pictures interesting even if the writing or typing leaves something to be desired.

When using graphics don’t forget to add an alt tag. Alt tags help search engines index your content. At least they used to. If search engines should ever decide to ignore these tags they will still be helpful for some of your readers. In WordPress you can add additional information about a picture including the Alt tag during the upload process.

There is some debate as to whether a person should watermark their photos. I personally like to add branding to my photos. The main reason I have not done so on this blog is because, this is my personal blog and it takes extra effort. It’s just one more thing to do before publishing. Like most people I have more to get done in a day than I have time to do it. But don’t be surprised to see it in the future. I was especially tempted to watermark the Petroglyph picture I posted.

I usually like to add a description along with the alt tag. I’m not sure if it helps with SEO (search engine optimization) but I like to add a bit of information about what people are seeing

Now the point of this post is, if you value your time it may be better to use stock art instead of your own graphics. In the long run you will save that most precious resource – Time.

I probably won’t use stock art, but then again, I am plagued with strange and unusual dreams that the average person is not burdened with.

Wishing you the best in blogging and the best in life,
Andrew Ledford
