The last SMMOC was an unusual meeting in that it was little light on content.
We had an interesting conversation about the pros and cons of developing a new app. The one in question was called luxping.

One of the best marketing tips came from john chow about using FaceBook’s behavioral targeting to find hot prospects. The week’s best quote is “FaceBook is too big to ignore.”

It was also reported that if you have very good content that gets good interaction you might get as high as 40 percent reach on your FaceBook business page posts. If your content is not popular you might get 10 percent or maybe less reach on your posts.

It was suggested that Hubspot is a very good solution to centralize a business’s online communications. At least one person reported that Hubspot can be used like a command and control center sending posts to email, social media, blogs and other online touch points.

The hub and spokes online model was talked about with an emphasis on the center of the wheel, your hub, is your brand.

We also talked about abandoning social media in favor of just using a blog/website as a person’s online presents. Many people felt this practice could leave a business vulnerable to negative comments without the chance to respond.

There was one gem of an idea that you would have had to been there to learn about. I think I will use it as one of those semi secret marketing tactics I use for myself and people I work with.

That was about it for this week.

Social Media Masterminds Orange County Notes March 22

We started the meeting by talking about Waze a GPS crowd sourced navigation app that was acquired by Google in 2013. It was suggested that the app information is being incorporated into Google Maps. The next item on the agenda is for people who are tired of being social – it is the unsocial or anti social app Cloak at usecloak.com/. Cloak helps you avoid real life social encounters by telling you last known location of your friends or enemies.

How many of you use FaceBook as a search engine? A FaceBook preferred Marketing Developer Who attended the meeting said FaceBook for search is a growing trend. What do you think?

I thought a rather bold statement that was made by a member, but I forget who made it, is that “Teenagers fundamentally don’t have anything interesting to say.” and that is why Twitter is gaining in popularity with younger people. Everything they have to say can be said in 140 characters. It was also proposed that this is the reason Tumblr fits a younger demographic as well.

A very clever young lady in attendance helped us understand how she is using social media to help fans connect with each other and talk about a brand. I thought this was one of the most interesting conversations of the meeting. Although we did not spend nearly enough time on how it could be applied to the varied businesses represented as the meeting. One technique was to drip small easy to create content to a community and watch what happens. Then use the feedback you get to create more content that is similar. I have seen this technique used extensively by Denny’s

We also talked a little about medium.com and how it is like Tumblr for text. There was a young man that suggested using it to build a community of collaboration that you could later share relevant content with. I like this idea and may try using it with one of my Tumblr accounts.

The subject of identifying the persona of your ideal customer was discussed. It was purposed that you need to know the persona of your customer to know where they can be found online.

We also tackled the semantic quandary of SEO vs SEM. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing. I think SEO as a standalone practice is dying. SEM has traditionally been associated with advertising on Search Engines. However, it was being used to mean influencing search by all of a brand or businesses online activity. I tend to think that this later description is the new norm. My observation is that SEM is the new SEO.

A new device and service that many found very interesting is called Density at density.io

Density measures foot traffic to and from your brick and mortar business. Once you have this data you can use it to better serve and target certain customers and demographics. After a network is built out it will provide a wealth of information to marketers.

Another interesting app that is along the lines of Density but different, is Aisle411.com. Aisle411 makes it so people with a smart phone can easily find items by giving them a floor map of your store on their phone.

That is about it for this week’s Social Media News

SMMOC Meeting March 8 2014

At last Saturday’s meeting we talked about the value of PR Web and how it can be beneficial for raising visibility on Yahoo. it was also mentioned that one should have a really good photo on their PR page and/or press releases.

Another strategy that was suggested was to try to get PR articles on corporate blogs on Friday so they stay towards the top of the blog for a few days.

We talked quite a bit about KickStarter campaigns. There are two regular members that have active KickStarter campaigns.

We had a very clever social media person that works for a corporation and she suggested that we have a monthly editorial calendar with reoccurring themes.

One if the big take a ways from this meeting was that there is a trend to design websites for mobile first. For many average desk top user this is becoming painfully apparent. First was windows 8 and last week Google Plus changed to a mobile design. I do not particularly like using a mobile interface on my large screen desktop. And many people don’t like the tiles or cards of windows 8. I have not used it yet. I am happy enough with windows 7.

Change is here and perhaps we should all start considering making our websites desktop unfriendly.

When it comes to book marketing it was suggested to look at and perhaps model Scott Sigler of http://scottsigler.com/. I am not using hotlinks because I have become a G fearing person. Doesn’t the big G know everything you do? If not now it will soon. How do you feel about that?

We also talked about customer relationship management and a few different solutions. This is something that is different for each business so no one size fits all.

To get on a best sellers list on Amazon use a very very niche title.

We also talked a little about what constitutes and affiliate relationship and expanded the traditional definition.

This blog post is from handwritten notes. Which are not as easy to read as when I use my computer. It was an experiment using a tablet – a writing tablet.

This was an informative meet as usual.
Some of the highlights

  • LinkedIn’s new customer relationship management system and how it will be a game changer for sales employees. This will allow people to take their client base with them when they change jobs. It is like Google authorship for sales people and other professionals.
  • Finding influential bloggers with Ecairn and radiant6
  • Tracking twitter followers with Nutshell and Twitter counter as well as getting more twitter followers with Twiends.com
