Recap of New Google Features December 15 2014

Helping businesses and individual with video, community management, and social media, Andrew Ledford 562-423-1691

Google has been very busy over the last couple of weeks. I have posted about a couple of Google’s new features on this blog. Because of this week’s Google post I plan on sharing my general business social media news next Monday. Today it’s all about Google.

One new features is the ability to pin posts to the top of a G+ page or profile. I imagine this will come in handy for those who post to Google Plus on a regular basis. Pinning an important post to the top of a page will keep critical content from becoming buried.

The other new Google feature I mentioned in a post is the new Google CAPTCHA ‘NoCAPTCHA. A CAPTCHA is that annoying cryptic code that is often needed to prove a person is really human. The problem with some of the CAPTCHAs is that there are now machine that are better at deciphering them than some people. Google is using big data to combat this problem with a new and improver version.

The Biggest News From Google
Probably the most important news from Google occurred when I did not have time to write about. This huge and monumental news will affect all businesses that have a local presents.
Google changed their rules and guidelines for Local / Maps listings.

There are now firm guidelines for businesses that have multiple location as well as businesses that have separate department at the same location.

It does look like the new guideline may cause a good deal of confusion in their implementation. The new guidelines are bound to cause problems, just like the problems that were caused when Google Places became Google Local tied to a Google Plus account.

Another huge change is Google maps. Now everyone is forced to use the new maps. This has some benefits for webmasters and business owners. However, I think it is not as user friendly as the old maps for the average user. I find the features of the old maps that I relied on for my everyday life and business are now not available.

Now you can also add these enhanced maps to your Google drive

I believe you can also access your maps on Google drive in your Gmail.

Of much less significance is that there has been a slight design change to the notification bell on our Google Plus pages and profile.

There are a few tricks to navigating with the new notification tray and bell icon. You can still read posts from the new notification tray, but once an item has been clicked on it goes to the old notification try, the lower old bell. Another way to put everything from the new notification tray to the old one is to click on the Mark All As Read icon. I suggest not doing that. clicking the Mark All As Read will make it impossible to find people who have newly circled you.

Reading a post from the old notification tray will take you the post’s page.
I leave the computer for an hour and Google Plus changes.

Google sends out a notice that they are “reverting back to the original notifications experience.”

It looks like on the afternoon of December 16 the old notification bell and tray have vanished. Now we only have one Notification bell and one notification tray. From what I see it looks like the new notification has most of the features of the old one. I have seen some different behavior of the notifications over the last 10 minutes, but it’s probably the bugs being worked out of the new system. I think I better wait a while to finish updating this post

Re-shared post also received a new look and some new features.
Now you have the opportunity to directly comment on a shared post from the notification window. This can be handy for thanking the person that shared. This feature is also good for adding additional commentary to a shared post. It looks like this feature is no longer available.

In addition to commenting from notifications you will now see the number of comments the original post has received with a link back to the original post. The shared post is also surrounded by a grey box.

Another fairly new feature is that the image card now supports a 735×1102 sized portrait image. I haven’t tried this feature yet so I still need to experiment with this one.

One new feature that I do not like is that there is no longer infinite scrolling on your page stream. Infinite scrolling still seems to work for a personal profile. I thought this may be a glitch that would be worked out, but I now think it is a new feature of pages.

Google News – New And Improved No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA + Video

Google reCAPTCHA
Google reCAPTCHA

Google has been very busy this week. Yesterday they introduced a new CAPTCHA called No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA. I think people will probably call it the reCAPTCHA. I know the CAPTCHA is one of the most annoying parts of one of my signup forms. It will be good to replace it with something a little more people friendly.

Google News December 6, 2012

I have been trying to write this post all day. First I started in the morning with the idea I would add a little when ever I had some spare time. Well Google communities changed so much during the day I had to rewrite just about the whole thing.

I am kind of glad I did not start it earlier when I first hear about Google’s new feature because today is the first time a dog made me move my mouse and close a window with a happy tail. Yep the dog that is staying with turned around to get its bone and hit my arm with its tail using enough force to close a window. That is a pretty fancy trick.

My "Dogs" Group on Google Communities
My “Dogs” Group on Google Communities

As I am sure most of you already have heard Google plus has a new feature called Google Communities. By this time everyone should have the Communities feature activated. These are the groups Google has been missing. Don’t you think group are an important part of a social site. I have been using yahoo groups ever since Al Gore created the internet and I even like the groups I belong to on FaceBook.

Communities are supposed to also work with hangouts. It will be interesting to see how people in communities use hangouts and other Google features.

I am sure there will be interesting uses for combining groups, hangouts, and the new YouTube invideo linking. It wouldn’t surprise me if John Chow comes up with an ingenious way to use these features.

There are four levels of privacy you can have with you communities. I have heard rumors that communities will be a able to have communities. That was earlier in the day I haven’t seen that feature. However it would be interesting if it was possible.

I have also heard that you cannot change your privacy setting once you choose them at the beginning of the communities forming process.

I have started a “Dogs” community very quickly between seeing people today. It is a simple process with only a few steps.

Today Google also announced a new mobile photo app. It’s made by Nik and called Snapseed app Google’s answer to instagram? I don’t know if Google bought Nik or not. Just haven’t had time to research that.

I also picked up several boxes of business book from Chris Voss today. It was good chatting with him and meeting his dog.

I will try to post more about Google Communities a bit later. I still need to do one more training session with a dog that is staying with me.

Dog Owners Lose Weight?

Dog owners How much weight do you want to lose?

As I get a little older I seem to gain weight a bit easier and it takes a whole lot more work to get rid of it. I am planning on doing a lose weight and train your dog Google hangout. Is anyone interested? It will involve light exercise.

I was told that giving nutritional advice is against the law. So please don’t take anything I say as nutritional advice. If you would like nutritional advice please consult a licensed nutritionist. Any nutritional information at this time is just my personal preference.

I bet what I eat gets better when I start growing my own vegetables.

I suspect finding a time that is good for the majority of people will be difficult.

My friend Cliff Cardin wrote a blog post yesterday about weight loss. Basically the program will follow most of his main points. Cliff says there are four areas he sees as common to all weight loss programs. I think he does mention this information is from popular weight loss books. He’s giving his observation not nutritional advice. Of these four, I plan to focus on three

  1. Eat more fruits and vegetables, and to this I will add eat less processed foods
  2. Consume fewer calories
  3. Exercise

I have never done a program like this before, so for the most part it will be free. Free in that you will not be paying any dollars to me. However, I am thinking of taking donations. What am I charging participants. Well calories of course. It was my idea that participants could donate the calories they are not consuming. These need to be valid and wholesome calories, no junk calories allowed. This means no cookies, candies, or other empty calorie foods. I would actually rather have fewer calories than empty calorie.

Since I am not giving any nutritional advice if you would like to eat more calories and lot and lots of fat I am not going to tell you not to. In fact it will be interesting to see how that works. But then you won’t be able to contribute those calories to someone who really needs them.

There are still a few things that need to be worked out. One is someplace to store all those calories. I’m not going to store them on my belly. One idea is to get a small storage shed to keep at my place. But I don’t have much extra room. There may be a need to find a volunteer who will let me keep a few extra calories at their location. Then it’s a matter of getting or perhaps having someone help us make a storage shed.

There is also some hesitation on my part introducing people to my training drills. There is a good chance no one will actually want to do them. It is a big experiment. It may not even be important if the other parts of the program work for the individual.

I have started reading through much of my writings and have decided I need to rewrite most of the motivational material (meditations). I would say I am not quite ready.

I think I will be picking up my first shed today. This will let me clear my living room of furniture. That is step one to getting my social enterprise, someday nonprofit, started. Step two will either be building my aquaponics garden or getting the storage for surplus food.

There is a chance I will need to start the dog rescue for this project as well. A rescue will take more in the way of dollars. I’m trying to put the rescue off until I become somewhat established.

I am not sure about how I will distribute the donated calories. I suspect I will run into laws and regulations that’ll hamper helping those in need. Do you have any suggestions?

I have recently been thinking that the best way to help people may be to form a church. How do my readers feel about this?

YouTube will Soon Link To Pages

Here is an interesting development from YouTube.

YouTube is dropping the link your channel and Google plus profile using your real name policy. Today YouTube announced on their blog that you will soon be able to keep you YouTube channel name and still link it to a Google+ page. If I understand right on a business page this should allow several people to manage a YourTube Channel / Google page.

Here is the YouTube post

Google what did I do wrong?

I am really confused by Google’s idea of quality content. I am building a new website about rice cookers at BuyRiceCooker.com. (Update – I no longer have this website.) For a few weeks I have had a sentence to two about the new site coming soon and it was ranking on the 8th page of Google under “buy a rice cooker.” I added content and now the site is nowhere to be found.

Getting the content is a story unto itself. I hired someone to write it. In my opinion the original article was of such low quality I decided to totally rewrite the article. Not only did I not like how it was written I thought it had inaccuracies as well. I will be experimenting with a new site publishing low quality content because I want to see if quality really matters.

Even though I invested a significant amount of time and resources into the article, I am still vanquished to the hinterlands.

I don’t have any affiliate link on the site at this time, although I will be adding those soon. First I think I need to experiment with taking out the many instances of rice cooker and see if that help bring my site back from languishing in the wilderness.
