Puppet building Injury from Hot Glue Burn

While doing one final mod on the puppet I received a rather painful burn from hot gluing some pieces together. This is not the first time this has happened and a few days ago I had another minor injury doing this build.

It took the top layer of skin right off and blistered the finger too. I made a tool to prevent this sort of thing from happening, however, I needed to get these pieces together quickly and thought, I’ll just give it a little push.

It doesn’t look like much, but it does make working on the computer difficult. You never realize how much that finger is used until it hurts to use it.

I hope I’ll be able to do my test video later today. I have a feeling that my blister is going to rub on the mouth mechanism. But I do have a plan – I think it will be fine if I tape it up.

I am posting this to remind myself the pain and effort that went into building my Scarecrow. I plan on offering my services to businesses for promotions. I will offer a lot of value in the way of promotion and community visibility, the question is, will anyone compensate me – $$$? Until I develop a following I plan on doing street performances.

One of The Supporting Cast For My Puppet Show and Presentations

My puppet is almost ready for its debut. Before the main character shows up on the blog I wanted to introduce one of the supporting cast. This is before I finished building her. She is now sporting a nice sparkly dress.

The main character was finished this morning, however there was an accident and he crashed into the ground. Fortunately only his new nose fell off along with an easily replaced part for the mouth mechanism.

I hope to do a video test before I leave for work.

Update – there was a little more damage than I thought, but I think I fixed it with some hot glue. I will check everything better when I get back from work.

Did a little video test – So far everything looks good. I need more time to do a double check on all the parts.

Website and Special Puppet Project Updates

New Media Mingle Website
New Media Mingle Website

I have started using my new NewMediaMingle.com website for most of my business, video, entertainment, marketing, and media posts. I am redefining how I use my different websites. I plan to use AndrewLedford.com to post what I think are some of my most interesting social posts as well as more personal news. What I think are my most interesting posts are not always my most popular posts. My personal site will give me a place to highlight undervalued posts. I may also mention posts from some of my other sites as well.

Special project websites
This post could have gone on the NewMediaMingle.com but I thought it more appropriate here.
I will also start 1 maybe 2  new websites for my special puppet project. One site will be for the puppet performances and shows. The second possible site will incorporate the puppet but will primarily be a directory site to promote Long Beach Business, Tourism, and the Arts. I am waiting on a new website theme to start the second site.

On The Road With Andrew re-branded
I plan to re-brand or co-brand the On The Road With Andrew site. The new plan is to develop Our On The Road as the primary consumer media brand and eventually a food brand as well. I think it will be easier to retire or have partners if my name is not part of the main brand. I do plan on continuing to use On The Road With Andrew when I go back into production with that show. However, I may not have time to produce additional original content for the site.

Puppet Project News
Made the nose and a part for the body mount.
I am getting much closer to having my special puppet project in a functional state. The plan is to be producing a performance soon. I believe I will be doing test performances by the end of the month. I do have the January scrip done and partially memorized. I still need to work on the script for February. There is a February script concept but have not researched or written the script.

I think I have the puppet mouth working. Last week I spent a day making a new mouth mechanism and a modification to both the head mount and a mounting system for the body.

After creating the part for the body mount modification I decided that I am not going to use it to hold the puppet for performances. The body mount modification got re-appropriated to providing an important support element for the new mouth mechanism. But the new mouth design ended up not working the way I wanted. However, the new head mount made for the new mouth will improve the performance of the old mouth mechanism. Now the body mount is going to be used for the display stand used between performances. The part and its position has stayed the same but its purpose has evolved with the project.

The shorter item is the one I bought. It did not work at all, so I needed to make my own. With this project I have found that off the shelf products often don’t perform as expected. I buy a needed part only to have it not work. Then it’s time to make some modifications or make the part from scratch.

On Saturday night a few days before Google Plus made us all move to their new UI I worked on the nose.
I will need to make a few changes before I mount the nose because of mission creep. When I first started the project it had a much narrower purpose. It still may only be used for local performances, but I want to be ready to do a bit more with it.
I will need to see how it turns out. So far I am a little disappointed in how my new puppet looks.

Special Puppet Project Nose
Special Puppet Project Nose

The next step is to finish skinning the mouth. I have not yet made a final decision on the artistic design of this part. I think I may try a few different looks to see which I like the best. I am expecting to run into 2 or 3 technical problems with this part, but I think I have a few solutions as well.

The hat will also need to be finished. I believe modifying the hat will be fairly straightforward. However, it has some important design elements that make it more than a simple head covering. There could be one technical challenge with the hat that I think I have the answer to.

Along with the hat I plan on adding eyebrows before I do a very short test/teaser video to introduce everyone to something I have been working on longer that I had planned. This project will mingle some very old fashioned entertainment with new media in a grand experiment of promotion and human behavior.

The eyes that I introduce the project with on Google Plus will need to wait until I have a little experience using the current design.

Dogs Make Life Better Dog Centric Social Enterprise Almost Nonprofit

Why a people and dog centric social enterprise almost nonprofit?

Touching and Sensitivity Training
Touching and Sensitivity Training

I believe what I call the human / dog experience is the most important purpose dogs serve in a modern society. The human / dog experience includes people who do not personally have a dog. It even includes people who don’t like dogs. While the Human / dog experience is all inclusive it does place the greatest responsibility on dog enthusiasts and dog owners. People who love dogs are an important part of society, on many levels.

There is some discussion as to how much the dog has contributed to the advancement of culture in the early days of civilization. It could be that we owe dogs more than a passing thank you.

I have been thinking about what motivates me and I have realized a common theme. That theme seems to be helping, mainly helping people. The desire to help people may simply be pragmatic. Although if you delve deeper you will find there is more to it than just helping people. I don’t necessarily want to be a rescuer or an enabler, but I do want to help.

All types of people keep dogs. People who have dogs range from overbearing dominant personalities to very sensitive and caring people. What we need to do is accept who we are as individuals, and dogs can help with this. Once we accept who we are as individuals we need to accept who others are. Again we can learn many important lessons from our dogs. Accepting ourselves and others will make us happier and more loving. “To understand dogs is to understand life.”

Today I want to talk a little about a large group of people who have dogs. They are the ones who feel the social pressures of society more severely than more outgoing and gregarious personalities.

Many people who are drawn to the companionship of dogs are very sensitive. Often sensitive people find dogs more comforting than interacting with the diverse personalities we come across when dealing with other people.

There are some interesting reasons for this that I won’t dwell on here.

I tend to be on the sensitive side. So I know some of the struggles sensitive people go through. However, we can’t give up on struggling through the social landscape of humanity. We can use dogs as a model for what we find most noble in social interactions. We can rely on our dogs to take the sting out of social interactions. But we can’t abandon our fellow humans.

Sensitive people have a gift that more pragmatic people don’t always posses. As a sensitive person you need to accept who you are and contribute to the overall good. This is hard to do if you are hiding alone in contemplation. Dogs should serve as a catalyst to elevate the individual to rise above the adversities of life. Dogs not only make life better, they should also make us better as people too. This is the foundation of my book Best Friend Learning Together. It will also be the foundation of the social enterprise – not quite a nonprofit I am starting.

Today’s post was inspired by a couple conversations I had today on Google plus.

Food Deprivation Experiment

I have always liked to know about the world. As a child I was quite interested in animals and nature. You may have read in a previous post that in third and fourth grade I was experimenting with taking regular corn and making it into Indian corn. I bet with the genetically engineered corn that’s popular in America today children no longer have that opportunity. Making Indian Corn is the first big experiment I can remember doing.

I used to do a lot of testing of dog training techniques. One day I got to thinking about B.F. Skinner’s research with positive reinforcement. This was before positive reinforcement training was popular. The scientific dog training so many all positive reinforcement trainers talk about is based on the work of B.F. Skinner. Skinner would keep his animals at a certain level of deprivation to get the maximum benefit from the training cycles. I wanted to know how hungry and individual is at that body weight.

The experiment was to lose a certain percentage of body weight and see what effects it had. I believe Skinner said it isn’t truly a state of sufficient deprivation if the individual can control it. My desire for knowledge outweighed my desire for food. I have to admit, if I didn’t know I could get food anytime it probably would have affected my behavior.

The experiment did serve its purpose. I wanted to feel what it was like to be hungry, it was not to condition any particular behavior. After many days it was harder and harder not to eat. As I remember the food deprivation part of the experiment lasted several weeks. The whole experiment lasted much longer. I can see that a very hungry individual could be quite motivated to get food.

It did give me a different perspective than if I hadn’t done the experiment.

More Than a Storage Shed, It’s The Future

I have the new storage shed set up. It looks like an ordinary shed, but it is a little different, it’s my storage shed. It’s the shed that will hold equipment that’s essential to fulfilling greater accomplishments. My shed may look like a little donkey now, however it will carry the burden of sheltering essential supplies for the benefit of all humanity. The extra room my storage shed provides will allowed me to broadcast life saving information, especially for those in need. Sacrificing my living room for less fortunate souls is a small price to pay.

Assembling this oversized plastic box took somewhat longer than I had planned. However, the rewards to America and the world will be well worth it. The rain put a bit of a damper on my construction efforts. As did my not thoroughly reading the manufactures instructions.

The online directions indicated assembly was meant for two. I can attest that its assembly would have been easier if I didn’t need to use a wall and a few bricks in place of another person.

My shed was rescued from a household that is moving out of the area. It was raining the day I got the shed, with many accidents and bad drivers. Oh, and I had the unpleasant job of supporting the structure during disassembly. Now that doesn’t seem like such a bad job, except it was under the slope of a roof, and the roofs run off. In the soggy wetness I seem to have lost a screw. Before the project could be completed I had to buy more screws.

In this photo you can see one of the holes I think swarming bees might find. A missing screw is also visible
In this photo you can see one of the holes I think swarming bees might find. A missing screw is also visible

As I inspect the interior of the shed, it appeared not quite water poof. While I was out getting screws I also purchased a plastic box. I fully anticipate the shed will fulfill its duty and protect my resources from the weather. I do think a couple holes that could encourage occupation by swarming bees needs to be taped.

Getting and assembling the shed was the first goal, with this accomplished it’s time to move forward with the next. Out with the old, in with the new. Time to sacrifice a few items of comfort for greater utility. I think it prudent to modify my original plans a little. Keeping the TV may be a wise decision. You see the television is still a very good monitor for my standard definition video camera.

After the living room, my office will be the next goal I need to master. For the sake of my fans and my mission, I need to rearrange the entire office. The main computer, the main communication device, really needs to be next to the office door. Then the computer can be used in either the office or the living room. I think of the office as the ships (missions) bridge and the living room will soon be the department of communication. I have to admit no matter where I live the office eventually moves into what should be a living room

While it looks like the online part of our plan is coming together I still need to find a place to keep donated food. Do any of my followers have suggestions?

The New Shed is a Puzzle

Today’s main post is on my dog training website OCDogTraining.com

Shed Pieces
Shed Pieces

Today I’m trying to figure out how to put my new shed together. I found out I should have read the cleaning instructions on the manufactures website. I now have a little water in the walls. I drained it out of all but two wall panels. I am trying to figure a way to get rid of the water before I put it together.

Dog Owners Lose Weight?

Dog owners How much weight do you want to lose?

As I get a little older I seem to gain weight a bit easier and it takes a whole lot more work to get rid of it. I am planning on doing a lose weight and train your dog Google hangout. Is anyone interested? It will involve light exercise.

I was told that giving nutritional advice is against the law. So please don’t take anything I say as nutritional advice. If you would like nutritional advice please consult a licensed nutritionist. Any nutritional information at this time is just my personal preference.

I bet what I eat gets better when I start growing my own vegetables.

I suspect finding a time that is good for the majority of people will be difficult.

My friend Cliff Cardin wrote a blog post yesterday about weight loss. Basically the program will follow most of his main points. Cliff says there are four areas he sees as common to all weight loss programs. I think he does mention this information is from popular weight loss books. He’s giving his observation not nutritional advice. Of these four, I plan to focus on three

  1. Eat more fruits and vegetables, and to this I will add eat less processed foods
  2. Consume fewer calories
  3. Exercise

I have never done a program like this before, so for the most part it will be free. Free in that you will not be paying any dollars to me. However, I am thinking of taking donations. What am I charging participants. Well calories of course. It was my idea that participants could donate the calories they are not consuming. These need to be valid and wholesome calories, no junk calories allowed. This means no cookies, candies, or other empty calorie foods. I would actually rather have fewer calories than empty calorie.

Since I am not giving any nutritional advice if you would like to eat more calories and lot and lots of fat I am not going to tell you not to. In fact it will be interesting to see how that works. But then you won’t be able to contribute those calories to someone who really needs them.

There are still a few things that need to be worked out. One is someplace to store all those calories. I’m not going to store them on my belly. One idea is to get a small storage shed to keep at my place. But I don’t have much extra room. There may be a need to find a volunteer who will let me keep a few extra calories at their location. Then it’s a matter of getting or perhaps having someone help us make a storage shed.

There is also some hesitation on my part introducing people to my training drills. There is a good chance no one will actually want to do them. It is a big experiment. It may not even be important if the other parts of the program work for the individual.

I have started reading through much of my writings and have decided I need to rewrite most of the motivational material (meditations). I would say I am not quite ready.

I think I will be picking up my first shed today. This will let me clear my living room of furniture. That is step one to getting my social enterprise, someday nonprofit, started. Step two will either be building my aquaponics garden or getting the storage for surplus food.

There is a chance I will need to start the dog rescue for this project as well. A rescue will take more in the way of dollars. I’m trying to put the rescue off until I become somewhat established.

I am not sure about how I will distribute the donated calories. I suspect I will run into laws and regulations that’ll hamper helping those in need. Do you have any suggestions?

I have recently been thinking that the best way to help people may be to form a church. How do my readers feel about this?

Plastic Storage Shed Wanted

I need something preassembled and much more simple than the wood construction at this Chinese Garden
I need something preassembled and much more simple than the wood construction of this Chinese Garden

I am looking to buy a small plastic storage shed. If you have a used one that I could have or buy give me a call or respond to this post. I am in the Orange County, Long beach, San Gabriel Valley area of California. I need to move everything out of the living room so I can do Google hangouts.

You may have read the post where I mentioned that I’ve decided to empty my living room of furniture. I need the space for doing Google hangouts and I may also use it for some aquponics experiments.

It’s a small living room. I believe we need to make the best use of all our resources. So I am trying to practice what I preach. I was going to get rid of the TV, but now there is a new program I think I may enjoy watching. I might put the TV in a shed and set it up to watch the program then put it out when I’m done. the programs I watch are helpful for writing blog posts and formulating how social and personal rules work. So even when I take time off I am still working.

Some Goals Of An Intentional Community

I mentioned a few blog posts ago that I want to establish an intentional community, possibly in South East Asia. Its purpose would be multidimensional. First it would support research in breeding and training dogs.

We can learn a lot about societies by observing animals. In this respect it is particularly productive to observe wild, feral, and pet dogs. Here we have a pack of feral dogs sleeping
We can learn a lot about societies by observing animals. In this respect it’s particularly productive to observe wild, feral, and pet dogs. Here we have a pack of feral dogs sleeping

These communities would also have the dual purpose of introducing how to use positive reinforcement as a social strategy. While the training research would be to evaluate the effectiveness of training methods, the community dog training would teach positive reinforcement techniques. Dog training is the perfect vehicle for teaching positive reinforcement as a social strategy. I suspect it will take one or two generations before positive reinforcement can become a social strategy.

What happens when a pack of feral dogs chases the photographer
What happens when a pack of feral dogs chases the photographer

While developing positive reinforcement as a sustainable social strategy is a worthy cause, we’ll also need to develop sustainable economic models. If we look at the historical record and the scientific evidence, it appears competition will become an ever increasing threat to humanity. The threat of hyper competition is the reason we should explore developing cooperative economic models. Then the theory and successes learned about community economic development could be used in developed countries as well.

There may be some theological (political) problems with the research into dog training protocols and developing a positive reinforcement social strategy. I believe this will only be a problem for the casual observer. But then again, most observers are casual. Both of these systems are looking for the truth. We need to know what happens in both types of environments.

In less developed countries less developed technology would be used, but the social rules that make it work should be adaptable to the developed world. There needs to be universal or nearly universal rules if it’s to be useful for the further advancement of humanity. In the beginning these intentional community will need to be imbedded into cultures of tolerance for the proper incubation.

We need to remember that tolerance and the rules governing tolerance are also social strategies. Social rules are made of many intermingled rules and strategies. Some work together better than others. When they complement each other there is a synergy that seems magical. I have to warn everyone, don’t get too wide-eyed with the magic.

I think as a global community we’ll eventually need to develop a culture where being good is valued as much as being wealthy. I could be wrong, it may be that cultures of competition, greed, and hurting other is the only system humans are capable of. Changing our social rules about success will require us to redefine what being successful means.
