Our Dog culture Television Show started airing this week. The show is called Dogs By Andrew. In the first show we visit The Family Pet Expo in Orange County. You can see the latest shows on Long Beach cable at channel 32 on Charter and on Verizon it’s on channel 41.
I have added this episode of the video so everyone can watch on my personal site as well as the DogsByAndrew.com site.
Purebred dogs have a real purpose and there is defiantly something to be said for getting a dog from a reputable breeder Those of you who know me also know I like mixes. The good old, world renowned, mutt can be a very good dog.
I have seen a lot of behavior and physiological problems in pet store dogs. While many problems occur because of bad pet store management, not all pet stores are run baddy. Going hand in hand with pet store puppies are puppy mills. Yes I am in favor of eliminating puppy mills. As a society we do need to find a way of controlling dogs in pet shops and large breeding facilities. However, over the years it’s been my observation that many times anti breeding laws go too far.
The fewer dogs a city governments need to deal with the more money they will have for other project. Under these conditions I am always a little careful about giving carte blanche to the government.
Many of you know I want to start a dog rescue. So I am not against rescuing dog, in fact you could say I advocate adopting homeless dogs. On the other hand most of you know I really appreciate a well bred dog.
One of my dreams is to someday have a fairly complex breeding program. The breeding program I envision would be on a large scale. It would be on a large scale even compared to most large breeding kennels. An operation on this magnitude would also be quite expensive to build and maintain. I believe it would need to be part of another supporting project. I think it would work if it was the center of a poverty reduction project in a developing country. There is probably enough poverty in America now, but I have always found our laws too restrictive to actually help anyone with this model. Although there are variations I am exploring. The breeding program would provide a good deal of evidence to either support or disprove my ideas about breeding and dogs, and how breeding programs can affect societies.

I think requiring dogs to learn command in two languages is a little ridiculous, but other may see it differently. I admit it is good to use a common language but understanding dogs and how they communicate is more important than the words we use.
This politician does have a good point about using dog training to better understand another language. In fact I have developed a program for teaching English using dogs and dog training. I think it could also be used to teach French as well.
A couple canine articles have come across my Google+ account over the last couple of weeks. One is a strange looking South American wolf. I have seen pictures of these before. There are several canidae species I am interested in South America. Unfortunately one of the most interesting species is located in some very unfriendly territory. But this strange long legged wolf would be worth looking into.
The second dog is one I am more involved with. I ran across an article expanding on and refuting the old hypothesis about the origins of the dingo.
While it is quite interesting I would like to see the entire paper the article is based on. I suspect someday I will need to get my hands on that paper, its content will require a thorough going over.
It has always been considered that the Taiwanese dogs where the ancestors of the dingo. Now that this hypothesis is challenged I may need to readjust my world picture a bit. I still think these South East Asian / Australian dogs are related and extremely interesting.
Primitive dogs of South East Asia play a large role in a future nonprofit project I would like to do. The project would be very long term and involve having an ecovillage based on studying and breeding this type of dog. It would be one of my big projects. I expect a large project on this scale will yield valuable results.
A multifaceted project will shed a good deal of light on some interesting questions, not the least of which is how cultural rules change within new economic system. The project design will provide practical information about animal management and the usefulness of different types of dog training.
However, one of the best uses of this project and its research would come from a better understanding of public dog management. A dog centric community could provide useful insight into how we can better manage large dog population in developed and developing countries.
In fact, one of my dream projects from years ago is now being done by a well funded agency and is providing successful results in the area of rabies control.
The information my dog centric ecovillage provided would have a great benefit for developed countries. That is, if policies were put into place from the research it conducted. The savings could add up to billions of dollars and it would be a very good way to project soft power into economically contested developing counties. While I am most interested in South East Asia it would also be beneficial in some parts of Africa.
The savings to developed countries will come from improved public health and safety as well as improved animal control policies. Animal control covers a wide spectrum including population control, taxing dog owners, arresting dog owners, killing dogs, vaccinating dogs, protecting personal property from dogs, etc…
Public health and animal control are the two main driving factors behind the government’s interest in dogs. The pet industry is quite large in the United States, up to 34 billion dollars. While I do not have statistics on the animal control industry it is huge. Some elements of animal control overlap with the pet industry. In this category we will find the small pet rescues and some spay and neuter programs. Other parts of animal control are primarily run by government agencies or quasi government non profits.
With the proper insight we could change a whole host of social mechanisms for the betterment of society. Improvements could be made to taxing dog owners, spay and neuter laws, animal control regulations, and the business of dog rescue (of which I hope to be a part of). To improve how dogs fit into society we would need to change how we view a wide range of social rules. We may need to rethink the rules we have about nature, law, and the cultural norms of the dogs role in society.

A thought for the day
True virtue, integrity, and happiness is found when serving others.
A few observations about the dogs and people I’ve interacted with over the last few days. After talking to a couple clients today I got to thinking that I try to treat all my clients like celebrities. When I used to work for other people, celebrities would always get customized training programs with little extras. I try to give my best to everyone I work with. I don’t always tell people/clients, but I do very customized training programs and packages. however people need to work at training their dogs, accept the realities of the situation, and cooperate with me.
Just getting off the phone with a client and I realize I am not a good business person. Why do I say this? Because, I recommend what I think is really best for the dog and the owner, not what will make me the most money.
Earlier in the week I was talking to a client and they were telling me how their dog was really coming along nicely. It also turns out the people are learning useful skills that can be applied to areas other than dog training.
The important take away from today’s post about “a thought for the day” deserves to be repeated. True virtue, integrity, and happiness is found when serving others.
I’m still looking for a way to help people discover me online. There is a new reality to getting found online and it is not just creating content. At least not for me. I am working on getting a facility for a new online promotion. Always trying something new, in the meantime you can help by giving me some online love. How to do this you say? By clicking the G+ or sharing on FaceBook.
I am also interested in hearing from you, so leave a comment.
